A humming disposal that won’t grind is one of the most common service calls I get, and almost nobody talks about the actual cause breakdown. Here’s the number that should reframe how you think about this problem: roughly 80% of “dead” garbage disposals that still hum are not broken at all. They’re jammed. The motor is alive, the impellers are stuck, and the whole thing can be fixed in under five minutes with a hex key you probably already own.
The other 20% are worth understanding too, because misdiagnosing them costs people money. I’ve seen homeowners buy a new $200 disposal because they didn’t know about the reset button. What’s Actually Happening Inside
Your disposal has an electric motor connected to a spinning plate (the grinding plate or impeller plate) with small metal hammers called impellers or lugs that fling food waste against a grind ring. It keeps trying to spin, drawing full amperage against a dead load, which is what you hear: that loud, sustained hum.

What If the Hex Key Turns Freely But It Still Hums?
This is the scenario that usually means trouble. If you can spin the plate freely with the hex key but the disposal still hums when powered, the problem has shifted from mechanical (jam) to electrical (motor).

- Capacitor failure. Some motors use a start capacitor to get the rotor spinning. If it fails, the motor hums but can’t develop torque. The plate feels free but won’t spin under power.
- Burned-out motor windings. If the thermal protection didn’t trip fast enough in a previous jam, the motor could have sustained heat damage. Hum present, no rotation, reset button may not even pop out.
- Loose or failed switch. Less common, but a wall switch that’s partially failed can send intermittent current, causing a hum without full power delivery.
I’ll be honest: I don’t have good data on the failure rate split between capacitor vs. winding failures in disposals. My field experience says winding failures are more common, but I’ve also seen a lot of capacitor issues on older units. At that point, unless the disposal is a high-end unit under 2 years old, replacement is almost always the smarter call economically.
