A sticking door is one of those problems that starts as a minor annoyance and somehow becomes the thing that breaks you. You shove it open with your shoulder every morning for six months, and then one day a houseguest uses that bathroom and you want to disappear into the floor. I’ve fixed hundreds of these, and the good news is that 90% of them cost nothing but an afternoon.

The bad news is that most people fix the symptom and miss the cause. They sand the door, repaint it, and by the following spring it’s rubbing again in the exact same spot. So before you grab sandpaper, let’s figure out what’s actually going on.

Seasonal wood movement is responsible for probably 70% of the sticking doors I see. Wood expands when it absorbs moisture and contracts when it dries out. A door that swings perfectly in February will drag along the bottom by July in a humid climate. If your door only sticks in summer or right after a long stretch of rainy weather, this is almost certainly your problem, and the fix is much smaller than you’d think.

The other culprits: settling foundations (especially in homes built before 1980), hinge screws that have worked loose over years of use, paint buildup from previous owners who painted everything including the door edges (I have found doors with literally six layers of paint on the latch edge), and in older homes, actual structural movement or door frame racking.

Before you touch the door, close it slowly and watch where it catches. Mark the spot with a pencil or a piece of chalk. Then open it and check all three hinges. Grab the door handle and lift gently while it’s half-open. If you feel any play, even a small amount, you’ve got a hinge problem, not a wood problem. That distinction saves you two hours of unnecessary work.

The Hinge Fix (Do This First, Always)

This should be the first thing anyone tries. It solves the problem probably 40% of the time with almost zero effort.

Open the door and look at the top and middle hinge. More often than not, you’ll find screws that have stripped out of the door jamb. They’ll turn endlessly without biting. The hole is just wallowed out. Here’s the fix that actually holds: pull the screw out, stuff the hole with wooden toothpicks and a dab of wood glue (or a golf tee cut to length for bigger holes), let it dry for an hour, then drive the screw back in. I’ve been doing this for 20 years and it holds indefinitely. The wood gives the screw something real to grip.

While you’re at it, replace the top hinge screws with 3-inch screws instead of the standard 3/4-inch ones the manufacturer used. Drive them through the jamb and into the actual stud behind it. This is the most bulletproof hinge repair there is, and a box of 3-inch #8 wood screws costs $4 at any hardware store.

If a hinge leaf is sitting proud of the mortise (meaning it’s not flush, it’s sticking up slightly), that’ll cause the door to bind on the latch side when it closes. You can either deepen the mortise with a sharp chisel, or slip a thin cardboard shim behind the hinge leaf to push it out. Yes, shimming a hinge can fix a door. The geometry is counterintuitive but it works.

When It’s Actually Wood Swelling

If the hinges check out, you’re dealing with wood movement. The question is how much the door has grown.

Light rubbing, where the door just barely drags or takes a little push to close, can sometimes be fixed without removing the door at all. Try rubbing a candle, a bar of soap, or a stick of paraffin wax along the sticking edge. This isn’t a permanent fix, but it buys you time and confirms the problem is friction, not serious swelling. In dry climates or for a door that only rubs occasionally, this can genuinely be enough.

For actual removal and planing, you need to know which edge to take material from. If the door sticks at the top corner of the latch side, the top hinge is usually pulling. Dragging along the entire bottom means the door has grown and you need to remove material from the bottom. Sticking at the latch edge near the middle usually means either hinge or wood swelling along that stile.

Removing the door is easier than most people expect. Tap the hinge pins up from below with a screwdriver and hammer, pull the door free, and lean it against a wall. A standard interior door weighs between 25 and 50 lbs, so you can do this alone. Heavier solid-core doors (common in newer construction) are closer to 80 lbs. Get help for those.

For light planing, a hand plane is the right tool. A Stanley No. 4 or No. 5 runs about $40 used on eBay and is worth having. Work with the grain on the long edges, and take thin passes. You want to remove maybe 1/16 inch, test-fit, remove more if needed. Do not go aggressive with an orbital sander on a door edge unless you enjoy sanding forever and still ending up with a slightly wavy edge.

If it’s the bottom of the door that’s rubbing and you don’t want to remove the door, a sharp hand plane or a door-bottom planer bit in a circular saw (Bosch makes a decent adjustable one for about $30) can work with the door in place. This is fiddly. I’ve done it, and I still usually just take the door down.

Here’s the part people skip: if you plane a door edge, you need to repaint or seal that edge before rehanging. Raw wood on a door edge is how moisture gets in and causes the swelling to repeat. Use whatever paint or primer is already on the door, or hit it with a coat of Zinsser BIN if you want something that seals fast. This step takes ten minutes and prevents the whole problem next summer.

Diagnosing and Dealing With Frame Problems

If the door is dragging significantly, and the hinge screws are solid, and this problem appeared suddenly rather than gradually, look at the frame itself. Doors in older homes sometimes rack out of square when a foundation settles, or when someone removed or modified a load-bearing wall upstairs. This shows up as a door that suddenly sticks badly on one corner while developing a gap on the opposite corner.

You can check this with a 4-foot level on the jambs and a speed square at the corners. If the frame is noticeably out of plumb, you’re past DIY territory. A door that sticks because the frame has moved is telling you something is moving, and that conversation involves a structural engineer or at minimum a very experienced carpenter who can assess whether this is old stable settling or something ongoing.

I don’t say that to scare you. Most settling in older homes happened 40 years ago and is completely stable. But you need to know the difference before you plane a door to fit a racked frame that’s still moving.

The Painting Mistake Worth Knowing About

Paint buildup is a genuine and underdiagnosed cause of sticking doors, especially in rental properties or homes that have had multiple owners. Each coat of paint adds a few thousandths of an inch. Doesn’t sound like much until there are eight coats on the latch edge and the door won’t latch without a firm push.

If you see paint buildup, the right call is to strip the edge back to bare wood with a heat gun or chemical stripper, then reprime and repaint. Just sanding over existing paint makes a mess and rarely gets you back to square. Citristrip gel (about $12 a quart) is low-odor enough to use indoors with windows open, which matters for an interior door you can’t easily move outside.

The fix that works is almost always the simplest one: tight hinges, a little planing, a coat of paint on the exposed edge. I’ve seen homeowners spend $400 on a new door when $6 in toothpicks and wood glue would have solved the problem. Take twenty minutes to actually diagnose it before you do anything else. That’s the whole trick.
