Your windows are probably leaking more heat than your insulation is saving. That’s not hyperbole, it’s what happens when weatherstripping compresses, caulk cracks, and the glazing compound hasn’t been touched since the Clinton administration. Most articles on this topic tell you to feel for drafts with your hand and then recommend one generic product. That approach leaves money on the table. Let me actually walk you through what’s happening, what fixes it, and what’s a waste of your time.
Why Windows Leak (And Why It’s Not Always Obvious)
Windows bleed heat from three separate places. Most homeowners only fix one.
The frame-to-wall joint is where the window frame meets the rough opening in your wall. During installation, someone filled this gap with expanding foam or caulk. Over time, the house settles, the foam compresses, and you get a cold channel running straight through your wall. You’ll never feel this one with your hand because it hides behind trim.
The operable sash (the part that actually opens) is where weatherstripping does its job. Weatherstripping doesn’t last forever. Most foam tape compresses flat and stops sealing anything after two to four winters. V-strip, also called tension seal, lasts much longer. I’ve found original bronze V-strip in 1940s double-hungs that still works perfectly.
The glazing is the seal between glass and sash frame. On older single-pane windows especially, the glazing compound dries out, shrinks, and cracks. Cold air moves through those hairline fissures constantly. You can’t feel it, but your heating bill does.
Most articles focus entirely on weatherstripping and skip the other two. Fix all three if you want real results.
The Diagnostic Step Everyone Skips
Before you buy anything, figure out where the cold is actually coming from.
The hand test is too crude. Grab a stick of incense or a smoke pen (Smoke Pencil Pro runs about $20 on Amazon) and run it slowly around the window perimeter on a cold, windy day with the heat on. Watch where the smoke bends or gets sucked into a gap. Mark those spots with blue painter’s tape.
Also pull off the interior trim on at least one suspect window. Just pop the casing off with a stiff putty knife. What you’ll find behind it is usually either a solid bead of old foam (good) or a gaping void that’s been quietly draining heat for years (common). If it’s the latter, that’s your biggest fix, and you’d never know it from the outside.
One more thing: on cold mornings, look for frost or heavy condensation concentrated at specific spots on the glass or frame. That’s a thermal map of where the worst air infiltration is.

Backer rod and caulk around the frame: biggest bang for the buck.
If you pulled that trim and found gaps, stuff them with closed-cell backer rod first (the gray foam rope, 3/8" diameter for most gaps, 1/2" for larger ones), then seal over it with a paintable latex caulk or siliconized acrylic if the area’s wet-prone. Don’t use 100% silicone if you’re painting over it later, it won’t hold paint. DAP Alex Plus is what I reach for in most interior situations. About $4 a tube. Trim goes back on, problem solved, and that window is tighter than it’s ever been.
Weatherstripping the sash: depends on your window type.
For double-hung windows, bronze V-strip weatherstripping is the most durable fix. Pemko and Macklanburg-Duncan both make solid versions, available at Ace Hardware or online. It’s harder to install than foam tape, you nail it into the channel where the sash slides, with the open V facing out toward the air gap, but it compresses against the sash and lasts decades. Foam tape is faster and easier. If your windows are newer and the gaps are small, use 3M’s gray closed-cell foam weatherstrip tape (not the cheap open-cell stuff) for anything under a 1/4" gap.
For casement windows, look at the existing compression gasket. It’s usually a rubber or vinyl bulb seal that presses against the frame when the window closes. When it’s flattened or torn, replace it, most hardware stores carry it by the foot. Mortite rope caulk (a gray putty you press into the gap) is the ugly but effective temporary version. Ugly is fine for a storm window you never open.
Glazing compound: the forgotten fix.
On single-pane wood windows, run your fingernail along the glazing where the glass meets the wood. If it crumbles, flakes, or has visible gaps, that compound needs replacing. Scrape out the old stuff with a stiff putty knife, clean the channel, prime the bare wood (this matters, unprimed wood sucks oil out of the compound and it fails faster), then apply new glazing compound. DAP 33 is the classic. Roll a rope between your palms, press it into the channel, then tool it smooth with a putty knife at a 45-degree angle. Let it skin over for a week before painting.
It’s tedious. It’s absolutely worth doing on windows you want to keep.
Window insulation film: the temporary option with a real use case.
The 3M Indoor Window Insulator Kit (about $12 for a five-window pack) is plastic film you apply with double-stick tape, then shrink tight with a hair dryer. It looks bad up close, blocks your view slightly, and you can’t open that window until spring. But it creates a genuine dead-air space between the film and the glass, and the thermal performance improvement on a single-pane window is real, roughly equivalent to upgrading from single to double pane for that season.
Use it in a basement or spare room you rarely enter. Don’t use it on a south-facing window where you want passive solar gain in winter. And don’t use it on a window with a faulty smoke alarm nearby and no other exit, seal your windows, but don’t seal yourself in without thinking it through.
Door snakes and draft stoppers for the sill area.
If a double-hung window has a real gap at the bottom rail, a door-style draft stopper isn’t the fix, that’s a weatherstripping problem. But temporary V-strip or even a thin bead of Mortite rope caulk pressed along the bottom rail works well and peels off cleanly in spring. This is the one spot where the $6 temporary fix is genuinely equivalent to the $30 permanent fix, because the bottom rail of a double-hung takes a beating and the weatherstripping fails again anyway.
What’s Worth Spending Money On (And What Isn’t)

Secondary glazing, either storm windows or interior acrylic panel systems like Indow inserts, is legitimately worth it if you have original wood windows you want to preserve but need real performance. Indow inserts run $150 to $500 per window depending on size, and they’re fantastic. Real improvement, no permanent modification, they pop out in summer.
Replacement windows are usually oversold on payback. The average double-hung vinyl replacement runs $400 to $800 installed, and the actual energy savings rarely pay for itself faster than 15 to 20 years. If your windows are rotted, broken, or you’re renovating anyway, yes, replace them. If they’re functional single-pane wood windows and you want tighter performance, air sealing and a storm window will get you 80% of the way there for a quarter of the cost.
The expensive aerosol foam kits with the gun applicator and all the nozzles are overkill for window work. A can of Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks ($7 at Home Depot) is all you need. Use the straw version, apply in thin layers so it doesn’t over-expand and bow your frame, and cut the cured foam flush before replacing trim.
The windows most worth sealing are almost never the ones you think are leaking. Do the smoke test, pull the trim on at least one window, and let the actual evidence drive the repair list. Cold air doesn’t announce itself, you find it.
