Most people hit the reset button, nothing happens, and they assume the outlet is dead. That’s usually wrong. The outlet is probably fine, it’s just not ready to reset yet, and there’s a specific sequence you have to follow or it won’t work. I’ve watched homeowners replace perfectly good GFCI outlets because they didn’t know about that sequence. Expensive mistake.
Here’s what’s actually going on and how to fix it in about three minutes.
What a GFCI Outlet Actually Does (The Short Version)
A GFCI, which stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, is monitoring the current flowing through your outlet constantly. The moment it detects even a tiny imbalance between the hot and neutral conductors, around 5 milliamps, it cuts power in about 1/40th of a second. That’s fast enough to prevent electrocution. Fast enough to save your life if a hair dryer falls in the sink.
When it trips, it’s doing its job. The outlets are most common in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, and anywhere near water, because that’s where the National Electrical Code requires them.
One thing that surprises a lot of people: a single GFCI outlet can protect multiple standard outlets downstream on the same circuit. So when your GFCI trips in the bathroom, it might also kill power to an outlet in the hallway, or even in an adjacent room. This is intentional. It also means resetting the GFCI outlet restores all of them.
The Actual Reset Procedure (And Why It Fails)
Here’s the sequence that actually works.
First, unplug everything from the outlet. Everything. If there’s a GFCI outlet with something plugged into it when it trips, it will sometimes refuse to reset because it’s still sensing the fault. Unplug lamps, phone chargers, appliances. All of it.
Second, look for the two buttons in the center of the outlet face: one says TEST, one says RESET. The RESET button is usually red, sometimes yellow. Press RESET firmly. You should hear or feel a faint click. If it clicks and stays in, you’re done. Plug your stuff back in and test it.
If it doesn’t click, or it clicks and immediately pops back out, that means one of two things: either the fault condition still exists, or you skipped a step.
The step most people skip: you sometimes need to press RESET before power is restored. I know that sounds backwards. But here’s what happens. After a trip, some GFCI outlets go into a state where the internal contacts sit in a kind of middle position. The button feels like it clicks, but it doesn’t engage. The fix is to first press TEST to make sure it’s fully tripped (you’ll feel it depress), then press RESET. That two-step primes the mechanism and it clicks in properly.
If it still won’t reset after doing that, stop pressing the button repeatedly. Repeated pressing won’t fix a fault. You need to figure out what’s causing the trip.

I’ll be honest, this is where it gets a little more involved, but it’s still usually a DIY situation.
Check for a wet or damp condition. If this outlet is in a bathroom, garage, or outside, moisture inside the box or in a connected appliance is the most common culprit. Check the outlet cover for condensation. If you have an outdoor GFCI that tripped after rain, give it a day to dry out, then try again. I’ve seen outdoor outlets reset perfectly fine after 24 hours of drying.
Unplug and inspect appliances. A faulty appliance is probably the most common reason a GFCI keeps tripping. Old power tools, cheap extension cords, appliances with frayed cords, damaged chargers. Plug each one back in separately after you reset. When the GFCI trips again, you’ve found your culprit. Throw that thing out.
Check the other outlets on the circuit. Remember that upstream/downstream thing. If your GFCI is protecting other outlets, one of those could have something faulty plugged into it that’s causing the trip. Walk the circuit, unplug everything on it, reset the GFCI, then plug things back one at a time.
Check for a wiring problem. This is where it stops being a DIY situation for most people. If the outlet wires are reversed (line and load terminals swapped), if there’s a damaged wire touching the box, or if there’s moisture getting into conduit, the GFCI won’t reset no matter what you do. If you’ve unplugged every appliance and it still won’t hold a reset, you’ve probably got a wiring issue. That’s a call to an electrician.
What surprised me when I started looking into this more carefully: brand-new GFCI outlets can fail. I’ve pulled outlets out of the box that wouldn’t reset. Leviton and Hubbell are the brands I trust. I’ve had consistent quality control issues with some of the no-name ones from online marketplaces. If your outlet is old (and 15-20 years is old for a GFCI) and keeps nuisance-tripping without a clear cause, replacement is probably the right call. They run $12 to $25 for a quality unit.
How to Find a GFCI That’s Tripped in a Hidden Location
Here’s something I get asked about constantly. The outlet that’s dead isn’t a GFCI, but somewhere upstream there’s a GFCI that tripped. Where is it?
Start in the bathroom. There’s almost always one there. Check the garage. Check the kitchen, especially near the sink. Check outside outlets (there’s usually a GFCI near a door or on an exterior wall). If you have a finished basement, check the utility sink area if there is one.
Some electricians wire the GFCI outlet for an entire bathroom circuit to a GFCI breaker in the panel instead of a GFCI outlet. If you can’t find a tripped outlet anywhere, open your panel and look for a breaker that’s sitting in the middle position (not fully on, not fully off) or has a small test button on its face. That’s your GFCI breaker. Push it all the way to off, then back to on.
Older homes sometimes have the GFCI in a completely non-obvious location. I worked on a 1990s house where the bathroom outlets were protected by a GFCI outlet inside a closet. Took a while to find.

If your GFCI outlet trips repeatedly with nothing plugged in, call an electrician. Not because the work is complicated, but because that pattern tells you there’s a fault in the wiring itself, not in an appliance, and tracing a wiring fault requires opening walls, testing with a multimeter, and knowing how to read the circuit. That’s not about skill level, it’s about having the right tools and training.
Also, if you reset the outlet and you see burn marks on the face, smell anything strange, or the outlet feels warm, stop using it. That’s past GFCI territory. That’s a fire hazard conversation.
