Up to 40% of a home’s heating and cooling energy escapes through gaps around doors and windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That’s not a rounding error. That’s nearly half your utility bill bleeding out through spaces you could seal for under $30 and an afternoon’s work.
I’ve replaced weatherstripping on probably a hundred doors at this point, from drafty 1940s farmhouse entries to brand-new fiberglass units that somehow shipped with garbage foam tape already peeling. The fix is almost always simpler than people expect. What most people don’t realize is that the hardest part isn’t the installation. It’s correctly diagnosing which weatherstripping failed, and buying the right replacement for your specific door profile. Get that wrong and you’ll be back at the hardware store twice before noon.
So let’s make sure that doesn’t happen to you.

What You’re Actually Dealing With
An exterior door has four separate weatherstripping systems, and most people only think about one of them. Let me walk through all of them, because you need to know which one failed before you buy anything.
The door stops (sides and top). This is the foam, rubber, or vinyl compression strip that’s either nailed to the door stop molding or fits into a kerf (a narrow slot cut into the stop). When you close your door and push on it, this is what compresses to block air. It runs the full perimeter of the three non-hinge sides.
The door sweep (bottom). This is the strip attached to the bottom of the door itself. It seals the gap between the door bottom and the threshold. It drags across the threshold as the door swings, so it wears faster than anything else.
The threshold seal. Some thresholds have a vinyl or rubber bulb seal built into the top surface. This is separate from the door sweep. You press down on the threshold and sometimes feel it squish a little. When that seal hardens and cracks, even a perfect door sweep can’t compensate.
Corner gaps. The spots where your side strips meet the top strip. Easy to overlook, easy to fix with a short piece of the same material.
The fastest way to diagnose a failure: on a windy day, hold a lit stick of incense near the perimeter of your closed door. Watch the smoke. It’ll drift toward any gap with ruthless accuracy. You can also use the dollar bill test. Close the door on a dollar bill. If you can pull it out without resistance, you’ve found a gap.
Types of Weatherstripping (and What I Actually Recommend)
This is where most DIY guides go wrong. They give you a list of types and then leave you to figure out which one you need. Here’s my actual opinion after years of doing this.

Skip the foam tape for any main exterior door. I know it’s cheap and I know it’s at eye level at every hardware store. But it compresses and stays compressed within a season. If I install foam tape on a door today, I’m telling my client to expect to redo it next fall. V-strip is the right answer for the sides and top of almost every exterior door, unless you have a kerf-cut door stop that requires the bulb/tube gasket. For the bottom, spend the extra $10 and get a stainless-backed sweep rather than the all-plastic version. The plastic ones loosen and drag.
The Actual Replacement Process
I’ll walk through a full replacement here, sides and top first, then the sweep.
What you’ll need: utility knife, scissors or aviation snips (for metal V-strip), pry bar or 5-in-1 tool, hammer, nails or a staple gun, wood chisel if you’re pulling old kerf-strip, tape measure, and a pencil. Optional but useful: a hair dryer for softening old adhesive tape, and a can of 3M Super 77 spray adhesive if the new foam has weak self-adhesive backing.
Step 1: Remove the old weatherstripping. Peel foam tape off carefully. If it’s been there for years, use the hair dryer on low heat for about 20 seconds on each section, then pull slowly. Rushing this leaves adhesive residue that prevents the new tape from sticking. For nailed-on vinyl or rubber gasket, use the pry bar gently against the stop molding. For kerf-insert strips, grip the end with pliers and pull straight out. If a kerf strip breaks off inside the slot, a thin-blade chisel works to hook it out.
Step 2: Clean the surface. Wipe down the door stop with a damp cloth, let it dry, then go over any adhesive residue with Goo Gone or isopropyl alcohol. This step takes five extra minutes and makes the new weatherstripping last twice as long. I’ve seen brand-new installs fail within a season because someone stuck new foam tape over the old adhesive ghost.
Step 3: Measure and cut your new material. Measure each side of the door stop, not the door frame. The stop is the narrower strip the door closes against. Cut your strips 1/4 inch long and trim to fit. Better to cut a tiny bit long and trim than to leave a gap at the corner.
Step 4: Install side strips first, then the top. For V-strip, peel the backing and press firmly into the corner of the door stop, folded edge facing the exterior. Start at the bottom, press 6 inches, check alignment, then continue up. Nail or staple every 12-18 inches if using metal V-strip. The V should open toward the door, so the door presses it closed when shut.
For kerf-insert bulb strips, press the flat spine into the slot and work it down the length of the stop. The bulb should face the door’s face, not the stop face. It needs to compress against the door’s edge when it closes.
Step 5: Install the door sweep. Open the door. Hold the sweep against the bottom of the door with the vinyl side facing the room’s interior. The sweep should just kiss the threshold, with maybe 1/16-inch contact. If you press too hard, the door will drag and the sweep will wear out fast. My rule: if you can hear it dragging, it’s too low. Mark the screw holes in pencil, predrill (exterior doors are usually solid wood or solid fiberglass and will split if you don’t predrill), and screw in.
If your door has a door bottom channel, you may need to cut the sweep to length. Use aviation snips for the metal backing. Cut from the hinge side, not the latch side, to preserve the end cap.
Step 6: Test. Close the door and do the incense or dollar-bill test again. Then step outside at night and have someone shine a flashlight along all four sides from inside. Any light you see from outside is a gap.
Real scenario from a job I finished last fall in Flagstaff: A client had a 2017 Therma-Tru fiberglass door with original kerf-strip that had gone brittle and cracked. We pulled the old EPDM bulb strip, ordered a replacement Therma-Tru weatherseal (part number WS009, about $31 at the time), pressed it in, replaced the vinyl sweep with a Pemko 315CN stainless sweep, and the homeowner’s Nest thermostat showed a 9% drop in heating runtime over the next billing cycle. Not dramatic, but it was a 45-minute job.
Another one: An older aluminum-frame door on a rental property I manage had a 1/2-inch gap at the bottom because a previous tenant had warped the door slightly by slamming it. A standard sweep couldn’t cover that gap. We installed a Pemko 018 automatic door bottom, which drops a seal when the door closes and lifts when it opens. Cost $89 installed, and the door went from “you can feel a breeze” to airtight.
When It’s Not the Weatherstripping
I want to save you from one specific mistake I see constantly. A homeowner calls me because their door is drafty, I drive over, and the weatherstripping looks fine. What I actually find: the door has settled and the latch-side stop has opened up 1/4 inch of daylight. No weatherstripping in the world fixes a misaligned door. You need to either adjust the hinges (sometimes adding a longer screw to the middle hinge pulls the door back into plane) or move the door stop itself.
The test: look at your closed door from the hinge side. The gap between the door edge and the frame should be roughly uniform, top to bottom. If it’s wider at the top or bottom on the latch side, that’s a hinge or frame issue, not a weatherstripping issue. Fix the alignment first, then do the weatherstripping. I thought for years that throwing enough foam at a misaligned door would eventually work. It does not.
