Cracks in a concrete driveway feel more urgent than they are. You see a line running across your slab, maybe a few inches, maybe a few feet, and your brain immediately jumps to “the whole thing needs to be replaced.” I’ve watched homeowners quote themselves into $8,000 driveway replacements when a $40 repair and two hours on a Saturday would have been the right answer. Most residential concrete cracks are cosmetic or minor structural issues you can fix yourself. You just need to know which kind you’re dealing with.
Let me walk you through how to actually do this.

Not all cracks are equal, and the repair approach depends entirely on what caused the crack. This is the part most DIY guides skip.
Hairline cracks, less than 1/8 inch wide, are usually just the concrete curing and shrinking over time. Nearly every slab gets them. They’re not a structural problem. Narrow filler or a concrete caulk is all you need.
Cracks between 1/8 and 1/2 inch are the most common repair scenario. These typically come from freeze-thaw cycles, tree roots beginning to push, or minor settling. You can fill these yourself. The question is whether the two sides of the crack are at the same height. If they are, great. If one side is higher than the other (that’s called differential settling), that’s your first sign of a bigger problem underneath, but it doesn’t automatically mean you can’t repair it yourself.
Cracks wider than 1/2 inch, cracks that are still actively growing, or any crack with significant heaving (one side noticeably higher than the other, more than 3/4 inch) is worth a professional assessment. A structural engineer will run you $300-500 for a consult, and that’s money well spent before you pour thousands into a fix that won’t hold. If you’ve got tree roots visibly buckling the slab, no amount of filler is going to help long-term.
A tip I give everyone: mark both ends of the crack with a pencil and date it. Check back in two weeks. If it’s grown, you’ve got an active problem. If it’s stable, you’re dealing with an old crack that just needs to be sealed.
What You Actually Need
Here’s where people spend money they don’t need to spend. Walk into any big-box store and you’ll find an entire aisle of concrete repair products, most of which are fine, and some of which are actively the wrong tool.
For hairline cracks, grab a concrete crack filler like Quikrete Polyurethane Concrete Crack Sealant (around $12 a tube). It comes in a standard caulk tube, bonds well, stays flexible, and doesn’t crumble out when the concrete moves slightly with temperature changes. Rigid fillers in hairline cracks will fail within a season or two.
For medium cracks (1/8 to 1/2 inch), you want a two-part product or a vinyl concrete patcher. Quikrete’s Vinyl Concrete Patcher is the one I reach for most often, around $20 for a 10-pound bag. For cracks that are particularly wide or deep, a foam backer rod (a foam cylinder you push into the crack to reduce depth before filling) will save you product and give you a better bond. Backer rod is maybe $5 for a roll and it makes a real difference.

This is where I’ll be specific, because the prep work is 80% of whether this repair lasts.
Clean the crack first. Use a wire brush or, if you have access to one, an angle grinder with a crack chaser blade. You want to remove all loose concrete, dirt, vegetation, and any old filler that’s already failed. Don’t skip this. Filler bonded to loose material will pop right back out. After brushing, blow out or vacuum up the debris. If there’s any oil staining from car drips near the crack, clean it with a degreaser and let it dry completely. Filler won’t bond to oily concrete.
Let it dry. If you cleaned with water, give it at least 24 hours in dry weather. The concrete needs to be surface-dry, though slightly damp is actually fine for some products. Check the label on whatever you’re using.
Set your backer rod if needed. For cracks deeper than about 1/4 inch, push backer rod down into the crack until it sits about 1/4 inch below the surface. You’re trying to create a consistent depth for your filler so it doesn’t shrink and sink.
Apply the filler. For a caulk-style product, cut the tip to slightly narrower than your crack, hold the tube at a 45-degree angle, and move steadily along the crack, slightly overfilling. For a mixed patcher like the Vinyl Concrete Patcher, mix it to a stiff, dough-like consistency and pack it into the crack with a margin trowel. Work it in, compact it, don’t leave air pockets.
Tool and feather the surface. Use a trowel or even a plastic putty knife to smooth the filler flush with the surrounding surface. Feather the edges outward so there’s no lip that water can catch. On longer cracks, work in sections of 2-3 feet so the material doesn’t start setting before you finish.
Cure time. Most products say 24-48 hours before foot traffic, 72 hours before vehicle traffic. Respect this. I know it’s tempting to back the car out after 12 hours but if the filler is still curing under a 4,000-pound vehicle, you’ll compress it and it won’t bond properly.
Optional but genuinely worth doing: once the repair is fully cured, apply a concrete sealer over the entire driveway, not just the crack. A penetrating silane-siloxane sealer like RadonSeal or SiloXane Pro will protect the repair and the whole slab from freeze-thaw damage, which is the main thing that will reopen cracks in cold climates. Expect to pay $50-80 for a 5-gallon pail, which is enough for most residential driveways.
One Thing People Get Wrong (And It’s Expensive)
People reach for concrete resurfacer too quickly. If you’ve got a driveway with multiple cracks and some surface spalling, it’s tempting to just skim the whole thing with a product like Quikrete Concrete Resurfacer and call it done. I’ve seen this go badly more times than I can count.
Resurfacer is a thin-coat product, typically 1/8 to 1/4 inch. It bonds to the existing concrete and gives you a fresh surface. What it cannot do is bridge active cracks. Any crack that’s still moving at all, even seasonally, will telegraph right back through the resurfacer within a year or two. If you’re going to resurface, fill every crack first with a flexible sealant, let it cure, then resurface. Don’t let anyone convince you the resurfacer alone will handle it.
Also: concrete resurfacer is not beginner-friendly. It sets fast, it requires consistent spreading across the whole surface, and you’ll see every trowel mark when it dries. If you’re doing a full resurfacing job for the first time, rent a gauge rake and watch some real tutorials before you start. Your window for working the material is narrow.

Honestly, most residential driveway cracks don’t require a professional. But here are the situations where I’d tell a homeowner to put the trowel down:
One or more slabs have settled more than an inch below adjacent slabs. You might want to get a mudjacking or polyurethane foam lifting estimate before you do any surface work. Mudjacking (pumping a grout slurry under the slab to lift it) runs $500-1,200 depending on how many slabs and your region. Poly foam lifting is typically a bit more. Either way, it’s pointless to repair the surface before you fix the grade.
If water is visibly pooling toward your foundation after rain and a sunken slab is contributing to that, this is not just a cosmetic issue. Water against a foundation is expensive. Handle it.
And if your cracks are accompanied by crumbling concrete (not just cracking, but actual disintegration of the material), you may have carbonation or alkali-silica reaction issues. Those are beyond DIY territory.
