Sanding kitchen cabinets is a lie sold to you by people who’ve never spent a weekend hunched over forty doors with a random orbital sander and a grudge.
You don’t need to sand. Not if you prep correctly. The cabinets that fail after a no-sand paint job didn’t fail because skipping the sandpaper was wrong. They failed because someone skipped prep entirely, slapped on a coat of whatever was on sale at the hardware store, and called it a day. That’s a different problem.
Here’s what actually works.
Why “No Sanding” Gets a Bad Reputation
Most cabinet painting fails I’ve seen in twenty years trace back to one thing: adhesion. Paint doesn’t bond to slick, greasy surfaces. Sanding works because it mechanically roughens the surface and gives paint something to grip. Skip it, and you need a chemical substitute that does the same job.
The conventional wisdom is “always sand first.” I believed that too, until I started testing liquid deglosser products seriously about eight years ago. The results shifted my thinking. A well-deglossed, primed surface holds paint just as well as a lightly sanded one, in most residential applications. The asterisk: if your cabinet finish is heavily peeling or damaged, you’ve got a different problem and sanding (or even stripping) is the right answer.
For cabinets in normal condition with intact factory finish or old paint, the no-sand approach works reliably.
What You Actually Need Before You Start

Don’t buy anything until you know what your cabinets are made of. Solid wood, MDF, thermofoil, and wood veneer all behave differently. Thermofoil is the one that’ll break your heart. Paint adhesion on thermofoil is genuinely difficult with or without sanding; if the vinyl is peeling at the edges, no prep technique saves you.
For everything else, here’s the honest supply list:
- TSP substitute cleaner (Savogran makes a reliable one, around $8 for the box at Home Depot). Don’t use dish soap. It leaves a film.
- Liquid deglosser / liquid sandpaper (Klean-Strip KL-150 is the industry standard, about $12 a quart). Wear nitrile gloves. It’s not gentle.
- Bonding primer. This is where most people cheap out and regret it. Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 works. For a better grip on slick factory finishes, Zinsser BIN shellac-based primer is worth the extra money and extra hassle of shellac cleanup.
- Cabinet-specific paint. Not wall paint. Benjamin Moore Advance, Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, or Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations if you want a kit. Regular latex wall paint will chip off cabinet edges within six months. I’ve watched it happen. Repeatedly.
- Quality brushes and a small foam roller. Purdy or Wooster. Not the $2 mystery brand.
As of July 2026, a full kit for a typical 10x12 kitchen (roughly 30-35 cabinet doors and drawer fronts) will run you $150-$250 in materials if you buy smart. Labor is where the real cost sits, which is why this is worth doing yourself if you’ve got the patience.
The Prep Work Is the Whole Job
I’ll be direct: prep is 80% of this project. The actual painting takes a day. The prep takes two days if you’re doing it right.
Step 1: Remove everything. All doors, all drawer fronts, all hardware. Number each door on the inside edge with a pencil so you know exactly where it goes back. Don’t trust your memory after four days of this.
Step 2: Deep clean. Mix your TSP substitute per package instructions and scrub every surface that’s getting painted. Kitchen cabinets above the stove especially. The grease accumulation up there would shock you. Rinse thoroughly, let dry completely. I mean completely. Give it overnight.
Step 3: Apply liquid deglosser. Dampen a rag (not soaking) with Klean-Strip and wipe down every surface in the direction of the grain. You’re dulling the sheen and micro-etching the surface. Work in sections, don’t let it pool, and don’t go back over an area that’s already starting to dry. This isn’t a soak-and-wait product.
Step 4: Repair any damage. Dings, holes, and scratches get filled with wood filler now, before primer. Let it dry, then knock it down with a sanding block (yes, just on the patch). A small sanding block on a spot repair isn’t sanding the whole project.
Step 5: Prime. Brush the recessed panels first if you have raised-panel doors, then roll the flat faces. Two thin coats beat one thick coat. Always. Let the first coat dry fully before the second, which with BIN shellac primer means about 45 minutes. With water-based primers, give it the full time on the can.
That’s it. You’re ready to paint.
The Painting Process (Where People Still Make Mistakes)
Thin coats. I cannot say this enough. The single most common failure mode after bad prep is thick coats that sag, dry slowly, and chip at edges. Two coats is minimum; three is better with darker colors.
For Benjamin Moore Advance specifically: thin it slightly with water if you’re spraying. If you’re brushing and rolling, use it straight. This paint self-levels well, which means brush marks largely disappear as it dries. Let each coat cure for the time on the can before recoating. Advance has a longer recoat window than regular latex, sometimes 16+ hours, because it’s a waterborne alkyd. Rushing it defeats the whole point.
Scenario from a project I managed last fall in Denver: a reader (her name was Jenna, she emailed after reading my column) had painted her cabinets with wall paint three years earlier and they’d chipped badly at every door edge. She sanded those failures back, reprimed with BIN, and repainted with SW Emerald Urethane. Two years earlier she’d spent $400 on the original materials doing it wrong. The redo with proper materials cost her $190 and the doors have held clean through a kitchen remodel.
Painted doors go back on after a minimum 48-hour dry time. Benjamin Moore recommends 30 days for full hardness on Advance. I’d give it at least a week before putting dishes back that could scratch a freshly painted surface.
The Hardware Question
This is a real decision point, not a platitude. New hardware transforms the look. But it also means drilling new holes in freshly painted doors if your old hole pattern doesn’t match the new pulls. Do that before you paint (drill first, paint second) or you’ll chip your new finish.
Current pricing on cabinet hardware: simple cup pulls run $2-4 each at Amerock, decent bar pulls are $6-12 each at Liberty or Franklin Brass. A 30-cabinet kitchen costs $150-350 in new hardware at those ranges. If your existing hardware is in good shape, spray painting it with Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic gets you 80% of the new-hardware effect for about $12 a can.
The Honest Limits of This Method
No-sand repainting works great on solid wood, MDF, and plywood box cabinets with intact finishes. It’s a reasonable choice for most kitchens built in the last 30 years.
It doesn’t work well on:
- Thermofoil that’s delaminating at edges
- Cabinets with years of layered paint that’s already failing
- RTF (rigid thermofoil) doors where the vinyl has shrunk away from corners
- Any surface with active moisture damage underneath
If you’ve got any of those conditions, the no-sand promise is a fantasy. You’re either stripping back to raw wood or replacing the doors. I don’t have a workaround for delaminating thermofoil that I’d stand behind.
Scenario: a couple in Phoenix tackled their builder-grade oak cabinets with liquid deglosser, BIN primer, and Benjamin Moore Advance in White Dove. No sanding, solid prep process. Three coats on the doors, two on the boxes. Result: clean, durable finish, total material cost around $210, project took four days across two weekends. They’re now at the 18-month mark and the finish still looks good.
Contrast that with a different project where someone skipped the TSP cleaning step and went straight to deglosser. The deglosser can’t cut through months of cooking grease on its own. Paint started peeling within 90 days. That’s prep failure, not method failure.
