Black mold on bathroom caulk is one of those problems where 90% of the advice online is either dangerously wrong or just sells you something. “Spray bleach on it and you’re done” is the most common instruction, and it’s also the one that guarantees you’ll be back in the same spot six months from now.
Here’s what’s actually happening: the black you’re seeing isn’t always Stachybotrys chartarum, the scary toxic mold that gets people out of their houses. Most of the time it’s Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both common bathroom molds that thrive in the silicone itself. They’re not benign, but they’re not “call a remediation company” territory either. The real problem is that mold doesn’t just grow on top of caulk. After a few weeks, the hyphae (the root-like threads) penetrate into silicone and become structurally embedded. That’s why surface bleaching doesn’t fix anything permanently. You’re killing the surface cells and leaving the root system intact.
So before you spend $30 on a mold spray and call it a day, let’s talk about what actually works, what the point of no return looks like, and when you’re genuinely better off replacing the caulk entirely.
What You’re Actually Dealing With
Fresh mold growth, a few weeks old, light gray or just starting to turn black, sitting on top of the caulk surface, can sometimes be cleaned. If you press on the caulk and it’s still pliable, not cracked, and the mold hasn’t visibly penetrated below the surface, you’ve got a real shot.
Old mold is different. Dark black. Embedded. Present for months. Silicone caulk is porous enough at a microscopic level that the mold works its way in and you cannot bleach or scrub your way to a clean result. I’ve tried. The staining stays, the mold regrows within weeks, and you’ve wasted time that would’ve been better spent on a $12 tube of DAP Kwik Seal Plus and a Saturday afternoon.
One honest test: scrub a small area hard with a stiff brush and a baking soda paste, rinse it, let it dry for 24 hours. If the black is still there, it’s embedded. Don’t fight it. Replace the caulk.

Assuming your mold is still in the “actually treatable” category, here’s what beats generic mold sprays.
You’ll need: household bleach (plain sodium hypochlorite, not “splash-less” or scented), paper towels or cotton coil rope (sold at hardware stores as “plumber’s rope”), a stiff-bristle grout brush, and either a spray bottle or a small bowl. An old toothbrush and some baking soda for mechanical scrubbing are optional but genuinely useful.
Step 1: Ventilate. Open the window, turn on the exhaust fan, close the door to keep the vapors from spreading through the house. Bleach off-gases chlorine, and in a small bathroom with no airflow you’ll feel it in your eyes and lungs within minutes. This isn’t optional.
Step 2: Dry the surface first. Bleach works better on a dry surface. Wipe the caulk down with a dry cloth and give it ten minutes if you can. I’ve skipped this step plenty of times and always regretted it.
Step 3: Mechanical scrubbing first, this is the step most people skip and it matters. Wet the area, apply baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with just enough dish soap to make it slightly viscous), and scrub with a grout brush. You’re removing the surface layer of mold so the bleach penetrates better.
Step 4: Apply bleach. Soak strips of paper towel or cotton rope in straight household bleach, and press them against the caulk for 30 to 45 minutes. This is dramatically more effective than spraying because contact time is everything with bleach. A spray evaporates and runs off within minutes. A soaked rope maintains contact and keeps the bleach working.
Step 5: Remove the paper towel or rope, rinse thoroughly with water, and dry with a clean cloth. Inspect. If you’re satisfied, let the area dry completely before using the shower again. If there’s still visible staining but it’s noticeably lighter, repeat once more. If it’s not improving after two rounds, the mold is embedded and you need to recaulk.
Step 6 (often skipped, never should be): After everything dries, apply a mold-resistant spray like Concrobium Mold Control. It’s a dilute sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate solution that, as it dries, creates a physical barrier inhibiting regrowth. It’s about $12 at Home Depot, it’s non-toxic after drying, and it genuinely extends the time before mold comes back. I’ve been recommending it to clients for years.
When to Replace the Caulk Instead
If you’re replacing caulk, do it right or you’ll be back here in 12 months.
Remove all the old caulk first. All of it. Use a plastic caulk removal tool (Dap makes a decent one for around $8) and a utility knife for stubborn spots. Don’t caulk over existing caulk. That’s how you create moisture traps and compound the original problem. The new caulk won’t bond properly either.
Once the old caulk is out, inspect the substrate. If the drywall or backer behind the caulk line is soft, stained dark, or crumbles when you poke it, you’ve got water intrusion and a bigger repair ahead. Don’t skip this step.
Clean the bare joint with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely. Bone dry. Overnight if the bathroom has humidity. Silicone doesn’t adhere well to damp surfaces, and this is one of the top reasons new caulk fails early.
For product choice: in a wet area like a tub or shower surround, use 100% silicone caulk, not siliconized latex. GE Sealants Advanced Silicone 2 is my standing recommendation. Apply with a caulk gun, smooth it with a wet finger or a caulk finishing tool, and don’t use the shower for at least 24 hours (48 is better). The biggest application mistake I see is people not taping off the lines first. Blue painter’s tape on both sides of the joint gives you a clean edge and keeps you from smearing silicone all over the tile. Pull the tape before the caulk skins over, not after it cures.
Why It Keeps Coming Back

Even if you nail the remediation or replacement, mold will return if you don’t address the underlying conditions. Silicone in a shower is constantly wet. That’s fine and expected. The problem is when it stays wet.
Squeegee the shower walls after every use. It sounds obsessive until you realize it takes 20 seconds and cuts surface moisture dramatically. A cheap $6 squeegee hung on a hook inside the shower is one of the highest-ROI mold-prevention tools available. Run the exhaust fan during your shower and for 20 minutes afterward. Most people run it only during the shower, which is roughly half as effective. A timer switch (around $20 installed) handles this automatically.
If your exhaust fan vents into the attic instead of outside, you’ve got a design problem that’s actively growing mold somewhere else. That’s worth investigating separately.
Caulk lifespan in a well-maintained shower is typically 5 to 10 years for quality silicone. If you’re recaulking every 2 years, something in the moisture or substrate situation needs attention, not just better caulk.
