My gas bill dropped $74 the first month after I insulated my attic. Not because I did anything fancy. I rented a blower machine from Home Depot for $25, bought 20 bags of Owens Corning PINK fiberglass loose-fill at around $13 a bag, and spent a Saturday crawling around in a respirator. That’s it. No contractor, no permits in most jurisdictions, no special skills required. Just the willingness to be uncomfortable for a few hours.

If your house was built before 1990 and nobody’s touched the attic insulation since, you’re almost certainly losing money through your ceiling every single month. The Department of Energy estimates that heating and cooling accounts for about 46% of a typical home’s energy bill, and an underinsulated attic is one of the fastest ways that money disappears. I’ve been in hundreds of attics over 20 years doing this work, and the most common thing I see is 3 to 4 inches of old compressed fiberglass batts doing almost nothing. Here’s the kicker: insulation loses effectiveness as it compresses over time. What was R-13 when it was installed in 1987 might be performing closer to R-7 now.

The good news? This is one of the most DIY-friendly projects in the whole house. No license needed, materials are at every big-box store, and you’ll typically recoup your money in 1 to 3 years. Let’s actually do this.

First thing: figure out what you’ve already got, and where you’re trying to get.

Grab a ruler or tape measure and go up into the attic. Measure how deep your existing insulation is. If you have fiberglass batts, also check if they’re kraft-faced (paper backing) or unfaced. If you’ve got old vermiculite (looks like gray gravel, kind of sparkly), stop right there and get it tested for asbestos before you touch anything. That’s a professional situation.

For most of the country, the DOE recommends attics be insulated to R-38 to R-60. If you’re in Minnesota or Montana, you want R-49 to R-60. If you’re in Georgia or Arizona, R-38 is probably your target. The R-value you’re aiming for determines how many inches of material you need, and that depends on which material you’re using:

  • Blown-in fiberglass (like Owens Corning or Johns Manville): roughly R-2.5 per inch, so you need about 15 to 16 inches total for R-38
  • Blown-in cellulose (GreenFiber is a common brand): R-3.7 per inch, meaning about 10 to 11 inches for R-38
  • Fiberglass batts: R-3 per inch for the standard stuff

I personally like blown-in cellulose for most DIY attic jobs. It’s made from recycled paper, treated with borate as a fire retardant, fills gaps and odd-shaped spaces better than batts, and it’s cheaper per R-value than fiberglass. A bag of GreenFiber loose-fill cellulose at Home Depot runs about $11 and covers roughly 40 square feet at R-19. Most stores will also rent you the blower machine for free if you buy a minimum number of bags, usually 10 to 15.

One thing to check before you calculate: is your attic floor accessible? Finished floorboards aren’t common in attics, but sometimes there’s plywood over part of it for storage. If you’ve got stored stuff up there and want to keep that space usable, blown-in insulation will make it harder. You could build a raised platform system (2x6 sleepers running perpendicular to the joists, then plywood on top) to preserve storage space while still getting deep insulation. That adds cost and time, but I’ve done it in my own house and it’s worth it if you use the space.

Air Sealing: The Step Everyone Skips

This is where most DIY insulation jobs fall short. Contractors cut corners here too when they’re moving fast.

Air sealing before you insulate is what separates a project that actually performs from one that looks good on paper. Hot air rises. In winter, warm air from your living space pushes up through every gap around recessed lights, plumbing penetrations, the tops of interior walls, attic hatches, and the spaces where wires run through the top plate. If you just dump insulation on top of those gaps without sealing them first, you’re insulating over a running faucet.

Here’s how to do it right. Before you add any insulation:

Go up into the attic on a cold day if you can, or use your hand to feel for warm air escaping. Common leakage points are around recessed can lights (the old non-IC-rated ones are the worst), bathroom exhaust fan housings, the attic hatch itself, any chimneys, and where interior partition walls meet the attic floor.

For recessed lights, if they’re the older style cans with holes in them, either replace them with LED housings rated for insulation contact (ENERGY STAR IC-rated), or build a sealed box over them from rigid foam or drywall and caulk it down to the ceiling below. Don’t just cover them with insulation. Those lights will get hot and you’ll create a moisture or fire issue.

For everything else, a can of Great Stuff Pro or standard Great Stuff foam sealant at $7 to $10 handles most penetrations. Use caulk for anything less than about a quarter inch. Use rigid foam board and canned foam or fire-rated caulk around chimneys (maintain the required clearance from the flue itself: 2 inches for a metal B-vent, no combustibles directly against a masonry chimney). The attic hatch gets weatherstripping around the frame and a rigid foam cover glued to the back of the door, at minimum R-10.

This step takes maybe two to three hours and costs under $60 in materials. Might be the highest-ROI two hours you spend in this entire project.

The Actual Insulation Process

Once the air sealing is done, the insulating itself is pretty satisfying. Here’s how a typical blown-in job goes for a standard accessible attic.

Setting up: Rent the blower from wherever you’re buying insulation. Home Depot rents their machine free with 10 bags purchased. It connects to a long flexible hose, maybe 100 to 150 feet, which is usually plenty to reach most of an attic from one setup point. Load 1 to 2 bags at a time, keeping the rest in the conditioned space so they’re easier to handle.

Blocking the eaves: Before you blow anything, make sure the eaves are blocked with baffles (also called rafter vents or insulation baffles). These are the cardboard or plastic channels that staple between rafters at the eave to keep insulation from blocking soffit vents. A blocked soffit will kill your attic ventilation and you’ll get moisture problems. Accuvent or similar cardboard baffles are around $1 each at the big box stores.

Marking your depth: Cut a few “depth rulers” from cardboard or paint stir sticks and staple them to the joists around the attic so you can tell when you’ve hit your target depth as you go. You want them every 10 feet or so. Mark your target depth on them in marker.

Blowing the material: Start at the far end of the attic, away from the hatch, and work your way back toward the opening. Hold the hose end low, close to the floor surface or existing insulation. Keep it moving. Don’t let it dwell in one spot or you’ll get uneven piles. Build up in passes rather than trying to get full depth on the first pass.

Two-person operation is easier but genuinely not required. Most rental machines have a simple cord switch you can use to pause it while you reload if you’re working solo.

Covering the hatch: Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch cover itself before you come back down. A pre-made attic stair cover like the Battic Door Energy Conservation cover (around $115 on Amazon) is a nice option if you have pull-down attic stairs. If it’s just a hatch, rigid foam glued to the back of the panel with some weatherstripping on the frame gets you there.

Total cost for a 1,200 square foot attic going from R-7 to R-38 with blown cellulose: roughly $350 to $550 in materials, plus the blower rental. A contractor doing the same job would quote you $900 to $1,800.

Should You Ever Call a Pro?

Yes, actually. A few situations where I’d hire it out or at minimum get professional advice:

If you have vermiculite or any suspect material in the existing insulation. If the attic has evidence of a moisture problem, staining on the roof sheathing, soft spots, any black mold. If you have spray foam already in the attic and you’re not sure what type it is. If the space is genuinely inaccessible or a very tight scissor-truss situation with almost no room to work. And if you have buried knob-and-tube wiring (common in homes built before 1940), you’ll want an electrician to evaluate it before you cover it with insulation. The old wiring needs to breathe and can overheat when covered.

Blown-in insulation is also a legitimate option for professionals to install in walls through a process called dense-pack, where they drill holes and pressure-pack cellulose in. That’s not really a DIY job. It requires special equipment and technique. But attic floors? You can do this.
