Squeaky hardwood floors are almost never a structural problem. Almost. But the internet’s full of people reassuring you it’s “just cosmetic” without actually explaining what’s going on underneath your feet, which means homeowners either ignore a fixable problem or tear up flooring they didn’t need to touch.
Let me give you the real picture.
Why Floors Squeak (and Why It Matters Which Reason Applies to You)
The squeak is friction. Wood rubbing against wood, or wood rubbing against a fastener. There are three root causes, and which one you have determines everything about your fix.
Seasonal movement. Hardwood expands and contracts with humidity. When boards rub against each other at the edges, you get squeaks that come and go with the seasons. If your floor squeaks in winter and mostly shuts up in summer, this is probably your issue. It’s the most benign of the three.
Subfloor separation. The subfloor has pulled away from the joists below, usually due to moisture, age, or original construction shortcuts. When you step on it, the subfloor flexes, the nail moves in the joist, and you get that classic creak. This is the most common cause in houses more than 15 years old.
Flooring fastener failure. The finish floor nails or staples that hold the hardwood strips have loosened, worked out slightly, or were never driven deep enough. Every step lets the strip rock a fraction of an inch.
Knowing which one you’re dealing with matters because the fixes are different. The fastest diagnostic: get down and put your finger on a squeaky spot while someone else walks across it. If you can feel the board flex, you’ve got subfloor movement. If it barely moves but still squeaks, it’s more likely fastener or board-to-board friction.

This is where most articles go wrong. They list five methods without telling you honestly which ones work and which ones are wishful thinking.
Here’s my honest ranking:
1. Squeeeeek No More screws. These are purpose-built screws with a snap-off head. You drill through the hardwood, the screw pulls the finish floor down to the subfloor, and the head snaps off below the surface. Sold in kits (the O’Berry Enterprises Squeeeeek No More kit runs about $22-28 at Home Depot or online as of mid-2026). This is the most reliable above-floor fix for subfloor separation or loose fasteners. I’ve used it on probably a dozen jobs and it works more often than not.
2. Powdered graphite or construction adhesive injection. For board-to-board seasonal friction, you can puff powdered graphite (like Supra brand, a few bucks) into the seam. It reduces friction, it doesn’t damage anything, and it’s a legitimate short-term solution. Don’t let anyone sell you on it as a permanent fix. In my experience it buys you one to two seasons.
3. The Staircase Fix Kit (FloorMate) and similar joist-targeting tools. Some kits include a joist-finding bracket so you can angle the screw into the joist for maximum pull-down. Worth it if you’re doing a whole room.
4. Baby powder or baking soda in the seam. Works temporarily by reducing friction. It’s free, it’s harmless, and it’ll last maybe three months. A legitimate emergency fix before you get the proper materials.
What doesn’t work, despite constant recommendations online: toothpicks with wood glue wedged in seams. It sounds clever. The glue doesn’t bond to a finished floor edge under movement, and you’re essentially jamming a small wooden chunk into a gap that will keep moving. I’ve seen this fail every single time.
The Squeeeeek No More Method, Step by Step
This is the method worth doing right, so I’ll walk through it properly.
You need: the Squeeeeek No More kit, a drill with the included bit, the depth-control tool included in the kit, and a putty knife or floor filler for touchup.
Step 1. Find your joist. The kit comes with a locator, but honestly a stud finder on the floor works fine. Mark it with painter’s tape.
Step 2. Locate the squeak on or near a joist line. Directly over a joist is ideal. If the squeak is between joists, you can still use the screw to pull the finish floor to the subfloor, it just won’t have joist holding power. It still helps.
Step 3. Set the depth-control guide over the squeak. The guide registers against the floor and controls how deep the screw goes.
Step 4. Drill the screw. The included screw has a snap-off head designed to break at a preset depth, leaving the head slightly below the surface.
Step 5. Snap off the head with the provided tool (or a plier). The break point is scored into the screw, so it snaps cleanly.
Step 6. Fill the small hole with wood filler matched to your floor color. For stained floors, a blended Minwax Stainable Wood Filler or a color-matched wax fill stick works. The hole is small enough that a good color match is basically invisible.
One thing I’d add that the kit instructions skip: on engineered hardwood over concrete, this method is borderline. You’re not reaching a subfloor the same way, and the screw may not have enough to bite into. Engineered float-installed floors need a different approach entirely (usually getting into the tongue and nail from another angle, or living with it).
Worked example: A 1,400 sq ft colonial in suburban Ohio, built 1992, developed a walking-path squeak across the living room about 12 feet long. Subfloor had pulled away from a couple joists. Twelve Squeeeeek No More screws placed on joist lines, 20 minutes of work, two fill sticks for color matching. Eight of the twelve squeaks resolved completely; the other four dropped from “embarrassing” to “barely noticeable.” Total cost: $31.
When to Stop and Call Someone
There’s a version of this problem that isn’t a flooring problem at all. If your floor feels spongy underfoot, bounces when you walk, or if the squeak is concentrated in one specific area near a wall or bathroom and has gotten worse over months, stop messing with screws and get someone to look at the subfloor or framing.
Soft spots near bathrooms are a red flag. Water intrusion from a long-slow leak can rot subfloor sheathing, and the squeak is just the first symptom. I’ve opened up floors where the homeowner had been stuffing graphite into seams for two years while the subfloor turned to mulch underneath. A $30 fix became a $3,200 subfloor replacement.
If you lift a floor vent and can see the subfloor, look at it. It should be solid, dry plywood or OSB. If it’s discolored, soft, or delaminating, that’s the actual problem.
Concrete Subfloor Situations
Slab-on-grade with glue-down hardwood or floating engineered hardwood is its own category and the fixes are different enough to call out separately.
Glue-down squeaks are almost always adhesive failure, where the board has lifted off the slab in a spot. Getting construction adhesive under a glued-down board from above is genuinely tricky. The most reliable approach: pull up the board with a flooring chisel (risky, be prepared to replace it), re-glue with a proper flooring adhesive like Bostik Best or Roberts 1407, and weight it for 24 hours. If you’re not comfortable pulling the board, this is a pro job. Botching it on a glue-down floor means you’re buying new flooring.
Floating floors over concrete squeak when they move laterally across the underlayment, or when the underlayment itself has bunched up or failed. You often can’t fix this from above with screws. The most you can do: add more weight to the room’s contents, check that all seams are properly locked, and try sliding a thin foam shim under any obvious gaps near walls. Not a satisfying answer, but that’s the honest one.
