Most homeowners assume a sagging ceiling means major structural failure. Usually, it doesn’t. Nine times out of ten what you’re looking at is a moisture problem, a fastener that gave up, or, and this one surprises people, old drywall screws that were never the right spec to begin with. I’ve walked into houses where the ceiling looked genuinely alarming and fixed it in an afternoon. I’ve also walked into houses where the sag was the first symptom of something I’d want a structural engineer to look at before touching anything.
Knowing which situation you’re in is the whole ballgame.
The textured part makes this more interesting than a smooth ceiling repair, because once you fix the sag, you have to match what’s there. Knockdown, orange peel, popcorn, skip trowel, each one has its own quirks, and a repair that’s structurally solid but visually wrong is genuinely maddening. I’ll be honest: I’ve redone texture patches more than once just because I rushed the matching step.

What’s Actually Causing It
Push gently on the sagging area with the flat of your hand. What does it feel like?
If it flexes and springs back slightly, you’re almost certainly dealing with fastener failure. The drywall is intact, it’s just lost its mechanical connection to the joists above. This is common in houses built between about 1965 and 1990 when drywall nails were standard and they back out over time, a process called “nail pop” that eventually becomes “nail catastrophe” in ceilings.
If it feels wet, soft, or crumbles when you press it, stop. You have a water problem, and fixing the ceiling before fixing the source of moisture is a waste of $300 and a Saturday. Find the leak first. Could be a bathroom above, a roof penetration, an HVAC condensate line. Once it’s bone dry, and I mean weeks of dry, not days, then you proceed.
If the sag is a hard, stiff curve with cracking along the edges, you might be looking at the drywall itself delaminating internally, or in older homes, plaster that’s lost its key bond to the lath. Plaster repairs are a separate skill set. I won’t pretend otherwise.
What surprised me was how often I find the screws weren’t even hitting the joists. A previous repair done by feel in a bad light. You poke a thin wire into the drywall at the edge of the sag and angle it until you hit wood, that tells you where your joist is. Or just use a magnetic stud finder; they’ll pick up existing fasteners in the ceiling accurately.
The Repair: Step by Step
First, safety. Get eye protection on before you do anything overhead. Ceiling debris in the eyes is not a metaphor.
Materials you’ll need:
- 1-5/8" coarse-thread drywall screws (NOT fine thread, NOT nails)
- Drywall screwdriver or drill with a dimpler bit
- 6" and 10" drywall knives
- Pre-mixed all-purpose joint compound (I’ve used USG Sheetrock All Purpose for years and it’s hard to beat)
- Mesh tape if there are cracks or gaps
- Texture product matched to what’s on your ceiling
- Primer (Zinsser BIN shellac-based if there was any moisture, otherwise any drywall primer)
Step 1: Locate the joists. Use a stud finder across the entire sagging area and mark the joist centerlines lightly in pencil. Standard spacing is 16" on center, though older homes sometimes run 24".
Step 2: Drive screws. Place screws every 8 inches along each joist through the sagging section. Drive them just past flush, you want a slight dimple, not a blown-through hole. The screw should pull the drywall up snug to the joist. If it doesn’t pull up, the drywall may be too damaged to hold; that section needs replacing.
Step 3: Assess the damage. Once everything’s re-secured, look at what you have. Fastener holes, cracks, tape seams that let go. All of it needs to be addressed before texture goes on.
Step 4: Tape and mud. Apply mesh tape over any cracks longer than about 2 inches. Skim joint compound over all the dimples and tape, feathering it out wide. Let it dry completely, in summer conditions this is usually overnight, but in a humid space I’ve waited 36 hours. Sand lightly with 120-grit when dry. Apply a second coat if needed. The goal is a surface flat enough that when you hold a straight edge across it, you can’t see daylight.
Step 5: Prime. Don’t skip this. Unprimed joint compound will flash differently under paint and affect how your texture adheres.

This is where most DIYers lose the plot, and I’ve done it myself. The instinct is to spray or roll the texture and blend outward. What actually happens is you end up with a visible ring of “new” texture in a field of “old” texture because the profiles are slightly different heights or densities.
I’ll be honest: perfect matching is hard and sometimes not achievable without recoating the entire ceiling, which I’d genuinely recommend if the repair area is bigger than about 20 square feet.
For smaller areas, here’s what actually works:
Orange peel: Use a can of Homax Orange Peel texture spray (around $14 at Home Depot). Practice on cardboard first, varying your distance from the surface. Typically 18-24 inches gives you the right droplet size, but your ceiling’s original texture might have been sprayed at a different distance. Hold a flashlight at a raking angle to compare.
Knockdown: Mix joint compound to a thick pancake-batter consistency and apply with a stomp brush or roller, then lightly knock down the peaks with a 12" knife after 5-8 minutes. The timing window is narrow. The first time I tried this I waited too long and tore the surface. You want the tips of the peaks to be just starting to skin over.
Popcorn: This is the most forgiving in terms of hiding a repair, but if your popcorn was applied before 1980, have a sample tested for asbestos before you disturb it. Testing kits run about $40, or an environmental lab charges around $25-$50 per sample. Don’t guess on this one.
Skip trowel: Honestly, if you’ve never done it, watch a few real demos on YouTube before touching your ceiling. It’s the texture type where technique variation is most visible.

A few real-world scenarios from my own work:
Older ranch-style home in Phoenix, 2023: 18 sq ft of sagging kitchen ceiling from a refrigerator water line that had been slowly seeping for months. Leak fixed first, ceiling dried three weeks, then reattached with 32 screws, two coats of compound, orange peel texture. Total materials: $94. Time: one full day plus touch-up the next morning.
1970s split-level in Ohio, heavily textured (skip trowel): 6 sq ft of nail-pop failure near a ceiling light. Re-screwed, mudded twice, hired a plasterer to do the texture match because I genuinely wasn’t confident in my skip trowel on a ceiling. He charged $185 and it was worth every dollar.
New construction townhome with 9-foot ceilings: First DIY attempt at orange peel match, got the distance wrong, texture came out too coarse. Sanded it back, reprimed, tried again at 22 inches. Second attempt was visually undetectable from 6 feet away.
When to Call Someone
If the drywall feels spongy anywhere, the source of moisture isn’t confirmed and fixed, or the sagging area is bigger than about 32 square feet in a single run, get a second opinion. A structural issue is unlikely but not impossible, and the ceiling is not the place to find out you missed it.
Popcorn ceilings with confirmed or suspected asbestos need a licensed abatement contractor. No exceptions. This isn’t a gray area.
Also: if the joists themselves look dark, stained, or soft when you get the ceiling panel down, call a contractor before you close anything back up. Joist rot changes the whole conversation.
