Most people assume a faucet leak means the spout is dripping. But a leak at the base of the faucet, that slow puddle that appears around the bottom where the faucet meets the sink deck, is actually a different problem entirely, and the fix most people reach for first is almost always the wrong one.

I’ll be honest: the first time I dealt with a base leak on a Delta two-handle kitchen faucet, I replaced the cartridges. Took me ninety minutes. Leak came back the next morning. I’d been solving the wrong problem.

Here’s what’s actually happening. That leak is almost never about the valve internals. It’s about the O-rings that seal the faucet body against the sink deck, or in some designs, the O-rings that seal the spout base to the faucet body. Two completely different failure modes from a dripping spout, and they need different parts.


What’s Actually Causing the Leak

Water pools at the base of a kitchen faucet for a few distinct reasons, and the one you’re dealing with shapes everything that follows.

The most common: failed O-rings on the spout. Most single-handle pull-out and pull-down faucets have a cylindrical spout that rotates on a brass or plastic body. That rotation is sealed with rubber O-rings, usually two or three of them stacked at different heights. After five to eight years, those rings get stiff, crack, and start weeping water every time you run the faucet. The water runs down inside the faucet body and shows up as a puddle at the base. Moen, Kohler, and Delta all have this design in their mid-range single-handle lines.

The second cause: the deck plate gasket or base plate seal failing. If your faucet sits on a plastic or rubber gasket between the faucet body and the sink, that gasket can compress, crack, or shift. This one’s more common on older faucets or on sinks where someone overtightened the mounting nuts and distorted the gasket. Water comes from a different direction here, usually visible when you run water and look under the sink with a flashlight.

What surprised me was a third cause I hadn’t expected before I started seeing it regularly: the supply line connections. The braided stainless lines coming off the inlet ports occasionally loosen at the faucet connection, and the water follows the faucet body down to the deck before it becomes visible. This one gets misdiagnosed constantly as a base seal failure.

Dry everything under the sink with a towel, run the faucet for a minute, then get your head under there with a flashlight and watch where the water is actually coming from. Don’t guess.

You won’t need much, but having the right stuff before you shut off the water matters because once the supply valves are closed, you don’t want to be making a hardware store run.

At minimum: an adjustable wrench, a basin wrench (non-negotiable for reaching the mounting nuts under the sink), pliers, a utility knife, plumber’s grease (silicone-based, not petroleum-based, which destroys rubber), and replacement O-rings.

This is where people get tripped up on parts. Do not buy a generic “faucet O-ring kit” at the hardware store and hope something fits. I’ve watched homeowners try this and end up with close-but-not-right rings that fail in weeks. Go to the manufacturer’s website, find your model number (usually on the handle escutcheon or on the original paperwork), and order the actual OEM O-ring repair kit. Moen’s equivalent is part 100427, Kohler has the GP857990 spout O-ring kit for their single-handle designs, Delta sells specific kits by faucet series. These run $8 to $20, and they’re the right size and durometer for your specific faucet.

If you can’t find the model number, take the O-rings you remove to a plumbing supply house (not a big-box store) and have them match the ID, OD, and cross-section with a proper O-ring reference chart. Close enough will fail.


The Repair: Spout O-Rings on a Single-Handle Faucet

This covers the most common scenario. The process is the same across most Moen, Delta, and Kohler single-handle kitchen faucets with a rotating spout.

Start by shutting off both supply valves under the sink, turning them clockwise until they stop. Open the faucet to release pressure. Put a towel in the sink cabinet to catch drips.

The spout comes off the body by lifting straight up, usually after you remove one or two set screws hidden under a decorative cap on the back of the handle, or under the faucet collar. On most Moen Arbor and Align models, there’s no handle to remove first: the spout lifts directly up after you unscrew the decorative ring at the base (this threads off counterclockwise by hand or with a strap wrench). On Delta Leland and Essa models, you’ll remove the handle, then pull the spout up and off the body. Kohler Simplice has a collar nut at the base of the spout.

Once the spout is off, you’ll see the O-rings sitting in grooves on the faucet body. Some are thin, some are thicker, and they’re all sitting in machined channels. Use a pick or the edge of a utility knife to pop them out of their grooves carefully.

Clean the grooves with a dry rag. Any debris or old grease in there will keep the new rings from seating correctly.

This step gets skipped constantly, but don’t: coat the new O-rings generously with silicone plumber’s grease before you install them. The grease protects the rubber during installation and extends the life of the rings significantly. Roll each ring into its groove evenly, making sure it’s not twisted. A twisted O-ring leaks immediately.

Slide the spout back down onto the body with a slight twisting motion. You’ll feel it seat. Reassemble whatever collar or ring you removed, turn the supply valves back on slowly, and run the faucet. Let it run for three minutes and then check the base.

Total time: forty-five minutes to an hour, including cleanup. Part cost: under $20.


When the Gasket or Deck Seal Is the Problem

If your faucet mounts through the sink with a base plate, and the leak seems to be coming from between the base plate and the sink surface rather than from the spout body, you’re looking at the deck gasket.

Replacing it means removing the faucet. Fully. Shut off the supply lines, disconnect them at the shut-off valves, disconnect them from the faucet inlets, and then use the basin wrench to remove the mounting nut or nuts underneath the sink. On most three-hole installations this is one nut under a center post, plus two supply line connections. Some faucets use wingnuts you can hand-tighten, but anything installed more than five years ago is probably corroded and will need a basin wrench and real torque.

Once the faucet comes up, you’ll see the old gasket stuck to the sink deck. Scrape it off completely with a plastic scraper (don’t use a metal scraper on a porcelain or coated sink). Clean the surface with a rag. Install the new gasket dry, or add a thin bead of plumber’s putty or silicone sealant around the perimeter if your faucet instructions call for it. Reinstall, hand-tighten first to get alignment, then snug the mounting nut. Don’t overtighten. Snug, not maxed out.


The One Case Where You Should Call a Plumber

The repair I’ve described above is legitimately DIY-able for most homeowners. Where I’d say hire it out: if your shutoff valves won’t close fully and you have no main house shutoff that actually works. Turning off a leaking faucet repair while water is flowing freely is a recipe for a much more expensive day. A plumber can replace those valves (usually $150 to $300 per valve including labor, depending on your market) while they’re there. That’s money well spent.

Also, if you’ve done the O-ring replacement correctly and the base is still leaking after 48 hours, don’t keep replacing O-rings. Have a plumber look at it. Sometimes the faucet body itself is cracked, and at that point you’re better off budgeting $200 to $600 for a new faucet and installation rather than chasing a crack around a $100 faucet.
