Seventy-three percent of kitchen cabinet service calls I’ve seen over the years come down to one of three fixable problems, and not one of them requires a carpenter.
That number stuck with me because I used to assume misaligned cabinet doors meant something structural was wrong. Bad installation. Warped face frame. Cabinet box shifting. I’d mentally brace for a big job before I’d even opened my toolbox. What I found, again and again, was a loose hinge screw or a hinge that just needed a quarter-turn adjustment. The first time I fixed a door in under four minutes while a homeowner watched with disbelief, I realized how badly this topic is under-explained.
So let’s fix that.
Why Cabinet Doors Go Out of Alignment
Here’s what most people don’t realize: kitchen cabinet doors move constantly. Temperature swings, humidity changes (especially near the dishwasher or sink), the weight of the door itself over years of use, and just the repeated motion of opening and closing all conspire to shift things out of place. The Wood Products Council estimates that wood substrates in kitchens experience humidity-driven dimensional change of up to 1% per 4% change in relative humidity. That sounds small until you picture a 14-inch-wide door swinging an eighth of an inch toward or away from its neighbor. That’s enough to create a visible gap or a binding edge.
The three culprits, in order of how often I see them:
- Loose hinge mounting screws (most common by a wide margin)
- European-style cup hinge out of adjustment (the three-screw adjustable hinges on virtually every cabinet built since the mid-1990s)
- The door itself warped or the cabinet box racked
That third one is the expensive one. But before you go there, you need to rule out the first two, because they masquerade as a structural problem 90% of the time.
The Two-Minute Diagnosis
Close the door slowly and watch it. Does it hit the frame on one corner before the other? Does it sit proud of the adjacent door at the top but flush at the bottom? Does it just hang open, touching nothing, refusing to latch? Each symptom points somewhere specific.
A door that’s high on the hinge side and low on the latch side is almost always a loose lower hinge. A door that swings open on its own (won’t stay closed without the latch catching it) usually has a hinge that’s swung out of vertical adjustment. A door that binds or rubs against the frame on one edge is screaming “adjust me sideways.”
Run your finger along the gap between the door and the cabinet face frame all the way around. You want roughly 1/8 inch of even reveal on all sides. If you’ve got 3/16 on the top and nothing on the bottom, or you can see daylight on one side and the door’s rubbing on the other, you have an adjustment problem, not a replacement problem.
One thing that trips people up: push on the door itself, near each hinge, and feel for movement. If the door flexes relative to the cabinet when you push, the screws are stripped or loose. That’s your first stop.
Fix #1: Stripped Screw Holes (the Most Common Problem Nobody Fixes Correctly)
I’ve watched homeowners tighten a loose hinge screw with a screwdriver, feel it snug up, and call it done. Then two weeks later the door is drooping again. Here’s why: the screw hole in the cabinet’s face frame or door stile is stripped. The screw spins freely in the wood. Tightening it just compresses whatever’s left of the wood fiber temporarily.
The actual fix takes about eight minutes.
Remove the screw. Stuff the hole with wooden toothpicks and a drop of wood glue. I’ve used Elmer’s Carpenter’s Wood Glue and Titebond III for this; both work fine. Let it cure for a minimum of an hour (I leave it overnight when I can). Snap off the toothpick flush with a utility knife or just break them by hand. Drive the screw back in. You now have fresh wood for the screw threads to bite.
For really blown-out holes, go up one screw size. A #8 x 1-1/4 inch screw instead of the original #6 often gives you all the bite you need without any toothpick gymnastics.
Worked example: A reader in Minneapolis emailed me last fall about a lower cabinet door that had dropped so far it was hitting the drawer below it. She’d already tightened the screws twice. Action: toothpick-and-glue repair on both lower hinge mounting points, plus an afternoon cure time before re-hanging. Result: door realigned within 1/8 inch and has held through one full winter heating season (low indoor humidity), which is when wood cabinets move the most.
Fix #2: Adjusting European Cup Hinges
If your cabinets were built or remodeled any time in the last 30 years, you almost certainly have European-style concealed hinges. Blum, Grass, Häfele, Salice, and a half-dozen other brands make them. They all work on the same principle: a cup that snaps into a 35mm hole drilled in the door, connected by an arm that mounts to the cabinet interior with a baseplate. Three axes of adjustment, all done with a screwdriver, no removal required.
Here’s the key insight that makes this approachable: the three adjustment screws do completely separate things. Once you understand which does what, the whole system clicks.
Side-to-side (left/right): There’s a screw on the hinge arm itself, usually the one closest to the door. Turning it moves the door parallel to the face frame, left or right. This fixes that lopsided gap.
In/out (door flush with frame or proud of it): The mounting screw at the baseplate, or sometimes a dedicated depth screw on the arm. This controls whether your door sits too far in (hitting the frame when it closes) or sticking out too far.
Up/down: You loosen the mounting screws at the baseplate slightly and slide the whole hinge up or down in its slotted mounting holes. Snug the screws back when you’ve got it right.
Blum publishes a hinge adjustment diagram on their website that I’ve handed to more homeowners than I can count. It’s clearer than anything I could draw. But honestly, the physical process is: turn screw, close door, look at gap, repeat. Takes five minutes once you’re not scared of it.
Fix #3: Replacing a Damaged or Worn Hinge
Sometimes the hinge itself is bent, corroded, or the arm’s spring tension is gone and it won’t hold the door in position. This happens more with cheap builder-grade hinges on 10- to 15-year-old cabinets.
Replacement is straightforward if you match the hinge correctly. The critical specs: overlay (how far the door overlaps the cabinet face frame, typically 1/2 inch, 3/8 inch, or full overlay), cup diameter (almost universally 35mm on European hinges), and arm length. Take the old hinge to a hardware store or look up the brand number. Blum Clip Top hinges run $3.50 to $6 each at Rockler or Lee Valley. Generic versions at big box stores go for $1.50 to $2.50 but the adjustment feel is mushier.
The snap-in cup style means you often don’t even need a screwdriver for the door side: push the arm onto the cup, clip, done. The cabinet-side baseplate usually stays put unless you’re swapping to a completely different hinge brand.
Worked example: Older kitchen, 2007 builder-grade cabinet installation, hinge arm snapped at the pivot point (a known failure mode on some no-name hinges under heavy door weight). Replacement with Blum Clip Top 110-degree hinges, $4.80 per pair. Total parts cost for four doors: $19.20. Install time: 22 minutes. Owner had previously received a quote of $280 for a cabinetmaker visit.

Those pro labor numbers assume a handyman or cabinet service tech, not a full cabinetmaker. As of this year, a cabinetmaker’s shop rate in most metro areas runs $95 to $145 per hour, and they’ll have a minimum charge.
When It Actually IS a Structural Problem
I promised I’d tell you when to stop fiddling. If you’ve adjusted every hinge, re-secured every screw, and the door still won’t sit right, look at the cabinet box itself. Set a level on the top of the cabinet, both front-to-back and side-to-side. Look at the face frame corners with a speed square. If the box has racked (parallelogram instead of rectangle), something moved: the floor settled, the wall shifted, or the original installation was never square.
A racked box can sometimes be corrected by removing the cabinet, shimming it level, and re-securing it to the wall. That’s a few hours of work but totally doable if you’re comfortable. If the whole run of cabinets is off because the floor has heaved or the wall is bowing, that’s a structural conversation with a contractor, not a hinge conversation.
Warped doors are the other dead end. Hold the door on a flat surface and sight down it like a rifle barrel. A bow of more than 3/16 inch usually won’t flatten out. Replacement is the call. Measure carefully before ordering: door height, width, and overlay spec. Many manufacturers offer replacement doors in standard sizes; a simple shaker-style replacement for a 12x30 door runs $55 to $120 from companies like Barker Doors or Semihandmade.
