Buckling laminate is one of those problems where most of the advice you’ll find online treats the symptom and ignores the cause. You’ll get instructions for pressing down the plank, maybe gluing the edge, possibly weighing it overnight with a stack of books. And six weeks later, you’re right back where you started, staring at that same ridge across your living room floor.
Here’s what actually matters: laminate buckles because it has nowhere to go. The floor is expanding, and something is stopping it. Fix the constraint, or you fix nothing.

Why Laminate Buckles (And Why It Keeps Coming Back)
Laminate is a floating floor. It’s not fastened to the subfloor; the planks click together and the whole assembly sits on top of an underlayment, free to move as temperature and humidity change. That movement isn’t a flaw; it’s by design. But it requires room to breathe, typically 1/4 inch of gap around every wall, cabinet base, door casing, and fixed object. If that gap gets blocked, the floor has to go somewhere when it expands. Up is where it goes.
The gap gets blocked in a few common ways: quarter-round or baseboard installed too tight against the flooring, transition strips fastened down through the laminate itself (a mistake I see constantly), or, and this is the one people miss, furniture legs sitting directly on the floor without glides, wedging planks against the wall over time.
The second cause is moisture. A slow leak under a dishwasher, a vapor barrier that was skipped on a concrete slab, a basement floor with seasonal humidity swings. Moisture makes laminate swell. Swollen planks in a tight space buckle. If you fix the gap but the moisture source is still there, you’re on a timer.
I’ve seen both situations misdiagnosed by contractors who should’ve known better. Diagnosing Your Specific Problem
Before you cut anything or buy anything, spend ten minutes on diagnosis. It changes everything.
Press down on the buckled section. If it compresses at all, you’re dealing with moisture swelling or underlayment failure, not just a gap issue. If it’s rigid and elevated, the floor has physically run out of room to expand.
Walk the perimeter of the room and look at the gap between the flooring and the wall, under the baseboards. If you’ve got quarter-round covering it, get a thin putty knife and gently pry it away from the baseboard (not from the floor) at the nearest point to the buckle. If the flooring is visibly touching the wall or the baseboard, you’ve found your problem.
Check for moisture next. Pull up the closest floor register or pop out a plank near the buckle if you can access one. Look at the back of the plank and the underlayment below it. Moisture damage leaves white or grayish discoloration on the back of the plank, and the underlayment may feel damp or show dark spots. In my experience, a $20 pin-type moisture meter from Harbor Freight will tell you more in 30 seconds than an hour of visual inspection. Stick the pins into the subfloor through the register opening. Anything above 14% moisture content on a wood subfloor is a problem; on concrete, you want to use a calcium chloride test or a surface-mount digital meter for a more accurate read.
The Fix, Ranked by What You’re Actually Dealing With
Expansion gap is blocked, planks are otherwise undamaged
This is the best-case scenario and it’s straightforward. The work is at the perimeter.
Remove the quarter-round or shoe molding (not the baseboard itself, which is usually nailed to the wall, not the floor). A pull bar or a thin pry bar against the wall works fine. Number the pieces with tape so you know where they go back. Now look at the gap along the wall at the buckle location. If the flooring is touching the wall, you need to create space.
At a doorway or inconspicuous corner, remove one or two planks from the edge of the run to create room for the floor to relax. Leave the room for 24 to 48 hours at normal indoor temperature (65-75 degrees F). The buckle will often self-correct as the floor settles back down once the pressure releases. Don’t try to force it flat or weight it down while it’s still under tension; you’ll crack planks.
Once it’s flat, reinstall the perimeter planks with a proper 1/4-inch gap, reinstall the molding with it nailed to the wall at a consistent 1/16-inch clearance above the floor surface so it doesn’t pin the flooring down, and you’re done.
Scenario: 400 sq ft living room with buckle along the longest wall, expansion gap had been filled by the previous owner’s new baseboard install. Removed 8 linear feet of shoe molding, pulled two planks, waited 36 hours. Floor dropped flat on its own. Reinstalled with 1/4-inch spacers. Total time: about 3 hours spread over two days. Planks buckled and damaged, but subfloor is dry
You’ll need to replace the affected planks. The question is how many and whether you can source a match.
If the floor is less than four or five years old and you have leftover boxes from the original install, you’re in good shape. Pull the damaged section by removing the perimeter planks in that row and working back. Most click-lock laminate releases with a pull bar and a tapping block; Pergo and Shaw both have installation guides on their websites with the specific release angles for their locking systems (usually 45 degrees up and then sliding out). Don’t pry from the face.
If you have no leftover planks, get a sample to a flooring supply house, not a big box store. The flooring team at a local supply house can often match discontinued patterns from Pergo TimberCraft, LifeProof, or Armstrong Luxe better than anyone at a home center will bother to. Expect to buy a full box (usually $40-$90 for a standard 20 sq ft box) even if you need three planks.
Moisture is involved
Stop here. Don’t replace anything yet.
You need to find and fix the water source. This isn’t negotiable. Replacing laminate over a wet subfloor is how contractors get repeat customers for the wrong reasons. If the moisture is coming from a plumbing leak, fix the leak. If it’s ground moisture coming through a concrete slab, you need a vapor barrier (6-mil poly minimum, taped at seams) or a surface-applied vapor retarder like Bostik’s MVP before any flooring goes back down.
After the source is addressed, let the subfloor dry completely. In a basement or slab-on-grade situation with a dehumidifier running, that can take two to four weeks. Check with the moisture meter until you’re under 12% consistently.

Those pro rates assume a local contractor, not a national flooring chain. I’d avoid the big box store’s installation services for anything involving moisture investigation, they’re optimized for straightforward new installs, not problem-solving.
When to Stop and Call Someone
Two situations. One: if you pull up flooring and the subfloor is soft, spongy, or shows black mold, that’s a job that needs a pro and possibly a remediation company before anyone touches flooring. Mold under a floor can be Stachybotrys or Chaetomium; neither is something to handle with a dust mask and good intentions.
Two: if the floor is over radiant heat. Laminate over in-floor radiant is fussier than standard installations. The expansion and contraction cycles are more extreme and the moisture dynamics are different. I’d want a flooring contractor who has specifically worked with radiant heat systems to handle any repair that involves pulling more than a few planks.
Otherwise? Most buckling repairs are well within DIY range. The diagnostic step is harder than the physical repair. Once you know what you’re dealing with, the work is mostly patience.
