Most people overthink this. A nail hole in trim is about as low-stakes as a repair gets, and yet I’ve seen fresh paint jobs look terrible because someone grabbed the wrong filler, skipped sanding, or didn’t prime. Twenty years in, I still see it on jobsites from guys who should know better.
So let’s get this right. Whether you’ve got a single doorframe to touch up or you’re painting every piece of trim in a 2,400 square foot house, the process is the same and it’s genuinely not hard once you know what actually matters.
The Material You Choose Makes or Breaks the Finish

Here’s where most people go wrong, and honestly, I made this mistake myself early on. I used to reach for whatever spackle was closest. DAP Lightweight Spackle, the stuff in the pink tub that goes white when it dries, is everywhere and it’s fine for drywall repairs. But on trim, especially painted wood trim that flexes slightly with temperature and humidity, it can crack out of the hole within a season. I had a customer in Denver call me back six months after we painted her living room because half the nail holes in her baseboard had hairline cracks radiating from them. That was my fault for using the wrong product.
What you actually want for trim is a flexible, paintable wood filler. My two go-to products as of June 2026:
DAP Plastic Wood (the solvent-based version in the tan tube) is my top pick for most trim situations. It grabs well, sands cleanly, takes primer and paint without telegraphing, and it flexes just enough. A 4-oz tube runs about $6-7 at any hardware store.
Elmer’s Carpenter’s Wood Filler (water-based) is a close second and easier to clean up. Good for smaller holes and for anyone sensitive to the mineral spirits smell of the DAP Plastic Wood. About $8 for the 3.25-oz tube.
What about caulk? Some painters swear by paintable latex caulk for nail holes, and I don’t disagree in one specific situation: when the hole is at a caulk joint anyway, like where the base cap meets the baseboard, just run caulk over the hole and call it done. But caulk in the middle of a flat trim face tends to stay slightly flexible and take paint differently than the surrounding surface. You’ll sometimes see a tiny dimple months later. Carpenter’s filler is cleaner.
For the absolute smallest holes, like from a 23-gauge pin nailer, you can honestly leave them unfilled if you’re using a satin or semi-gloss paint with good hide. You might be wondering whether anyone actually does this. Yes. On shallow-angle light, you’ll never see those tiny pin holes under most circumstances. That said, I still fill them because I’m compulsive about it.
The Process, Step by Step (Because Sequence Matters More Than People Think)
This sounds like it should be obvious, but the order you do things changes the outcome.
Step 1: Fill first, then caulk the joints. A lot of painters do this backwards. They caulk the seams between trim and wall, then go back and fill holes. Problem: the caulk you already applied can get contaminated with filler dust when you sand. Fill holes first, let them dry, sand, then caulk the seams.
Step 2: Apply the filler slightly proud. You want just a hair more than flush. Wood filler shrinks as it dries. How much it shrinks depends on the product: water-based fillers shrink more than solvent-based. With DAP Plastic Wood I typically apply it about 1/32" above the surface, which is barely anything. A putty knife makes this easier than a finger, though a finger works fine in a pinch. Just don’t glob it on, because a big mound will shrink, crack in the center, and you’ll be doing it twice.
Step 3: Let it cure fully. This is the most skipped step and it bites people every time. DAP Plastic Wood says 15-30 minutes dry time. Technically true. But if you sand it at 20 minutes and there’s any moisture still in the filler, you’ll smear it instead of sand it, and it’ll look fuzzy under paint. I wait a minimum of 45 minutes in a conditioned space, longer if it’s humid. In a basement situation with high ambient humidity? I’ve waited 2 hours.
Step 4: Sand flush. 120-grit works well. You don’t need to go finer than 150-grit on trim that’s getting painted. A small sanding block beats bare fingers because it keeps the surface flat. One light pass in each direction, then feel with your fingertip. It should be imperceptible. If you can feel a slight ridge, one more pass.
Step 5: Spot-prime. This is the step homeowners most commonly skip, and it’s the reason they end up with shiny spots or uneven sheen in the final coat. Wood filler and spackle both absorb primer and paint differently than the surrounding wood or previous paint film. If you don’t spot-prime, you’ll often get what painters call “flashing,” where the filler spot looks slightly different in reflectivity from every other angle. A quick dab of your topcoat primer (I use Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 for most trim work) on each filled spot, let it dry 30 minutes, and you’re set.
Worked example: Client painting her own kitchen trim for the first time, about 80 linear feet of base and casing. She had maybe 60 nail holes to fill. Followed this process exactly using Elmer’s Carpenter’s Wood Filler and Zinsser primer spot-coats. Final result was a dead-flat, professional-looking finish she said looked better than when the house was built. Total material cost for filling and priming: under $20.
When the Hole Is Bigger Than a Nail Hole
A standard 16-gauge finish nail makes a hole roughly 1/16" in diameter. An 8-penny nail driven by a framing hammer makes something closer to 3/16", and that’s a different animal. Carpenter’s filler can handle it, but you may need two passes: fill partway, let it dry and shrink, then come back with a skim coat flush to the surface.
If somebody has been careless with a pry bar and you’ve got a gouge or a split in the trim, the calculus changes. A gouge more than 1/4" deep really wants a two-part filler or epoxy wood filler. Minwax High Performance Wood Filler (two-part, mix-as-you-go) doesn’t shrink, doesn’t crack, and sands beautifully. It runs about $14 for a small can. Overkill for a nail hole, but exactly right for a pry-bar gash.
I’ll be honest: if the trim is badly damaged in multiple places, sometimes the better call is to replace the piece. A 10-foot stick of MDF base molding costs $12-18. Your time refilling and re-sanding bad areas has value too.
Getting a Clean Final Paint Coat Over Filled Holes
Assuming you’ve filled and spot-primed correctly, painting over the repairs is just normal trim painting. But a few things I’ve learned the hard way:
Use a brush, not a roller, for finish coats on trim. A 2.5" angled sash brush gives you control and leaves a cleaner edge. Foam rollers leave a texture that doesn’t match brush-applied paint and the filled spots will look different.
Semi-gloss is the traditional trim finish and for good reason: it’s washable and holds up to contact. But it’s less forgiving of surface imperfections than satin. If your filling and sanding were anything less than perfect, a satin sheen will hide it better. I’d rather redo the filling properly than drop down a sheen level, but you should know the option exists.
Worked example: Contractor on a flip property skipped spot-priming on 40+ nail holes in pine door casings, painted with Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane in semi-gloss. Every single filler patch flashed differently. Had to re-sand, spot-prime, and repaint the entire casing set. Estimate of extra time lost: 4 hours. Extra material cost: about $35 in primer and paint. All preventable.
